The Wabash City Schools community is mourning the loss of Matt Stone, a dedicated educator, leader, mentor, and cherished member of the Apache family. His passing marks the end of a remarkable 24-year journey of service to Wabash City Schools, where his influence shaped not only athletic programs but also the broader culture of the district he helped build and sustain.

Throughout his career, Mr. Stone served in multiple critical roles, including coach, athletic director, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Operations Officer. In each capacity, he brought integrity, diligence, and a deep sense of responsibility. However, he was perhaps most widely known for his enduring commitment to Apache athletics. He believed wholeheartedly in the life lessons sports could teach—discipline, resilience, accountability, and teamwork—and he made it his mission to instill those values in every student-athlete who came through the program.

For Mr. Stone, athletics were never just about competition or results. They were about shaping character and building community. He invested himself fully in every season, every team, and every athlete, ensuring that those under his leadership felt supported, challenged, and valued. His presence on the sidelines, in meetings, and behind the scenes reflected a leader who led with both competence and care.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Matt Stone was first and foremost a family man. His greatest joys came from time spent with loved ones—tailgating at Purdue football games, celebrating Cubs baseball games on his children’s birthdays, and marking special milestones with his wife, Kim. These traditions were more than routines; they were expressions of his love, loyalty, and devotion to family. His role as a proud “pop-pop” to Addi, Clark, Palmer, Selah, and Lincoln brought him immense happiness and pride, and those who knew him best understand how deeply he cherished these relationships.

Mr. Stone’s legacy extends far beyond titles or tenure. It lives on in the students he guided, the colleagues he supported, and the community he strengthened through years of unwavering service. His leadership, kindness, and passion will continue to echo through Wabash City Schools and Apache athletics for generations to come.

Though his passing leaves a profound void, the impact of his life remains firmly embedded in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be remembered with gratitude, respect, and enduring admiration.
